Pakistan must have been felt hard done by the rain-gods when their World Cup encounter against Sri Lanka was washed out. The Men in Green were brimming with confidence after stunning hosts England in their previous outing. With momentum on their side, Pakistan were favourites to beat Sri Lanka before the rain spoiled the party.

The washed out game means Pakistan now have 3 points from as many games. The points tally might concern the Pakistan fans but history suggests the team is well on its way to its second-ever World Cup title. Pakistan’s only triumph in the World Cup campaign came way back in 1992 and there is an eerie resemblance between that edition and the ongoing one.

Pakistan’s campaign in 1992 started in the exact same fashion. They had suffered a heavy loss against West Indies in 1992 and lost to the same side by seven-wicket this year. Just like this tournament, they had bounced back by winning the second game before the third game was washed out.

Sri Lanka next face Bangladesh at the same venue on Tuesday, while Pakistan take on Australia at Taunton a day later. Speaking after the washed out game, Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed had rued the missed opportunity to make the most of the momentum.

“As a team we really wanted to play this match especially after gaining momentum with the win against England,” Sarfaraz Ahmed said. “It is unfortunate that we were not able to play.”

“We have great team spirit and our confidence is on a high after beating England. We would want to carry the momentum into the remaining games. We won’t relax in our remaining six matches,” Sarfaraz added.

Pakistan had started their campaign in a dismal manner with West Indies bowling them out for a paltry 105. They, however, bounced back in style in the very next game by beating England in a high-scoring thriller. After piling up 348, Pakistan restricted England to 334 for 9.
