Australia have suffered a huge blow ahead of the semifinal in the ongoing T20 World Cup with their talismanic allrounder Ellyse Perry ruled out of the remainder of the competition. She will not take any further part in the tournament after sustaining a “significant” hamstring injury against New Zealand on Monday.

Australia beat New Zealand by four runs in the thrilling game to secure their place in the last four. The win, however, came at a heavy cost after Ellyse Perry was forced from the field in the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings.

Cutting off a straight drive from New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine, Ellyse Perry attempted an athletic throw but immediately fell to the ground, clutching her right hamstring. She soon left the field with help from the medics. Later, she was sent for scans and the result confirmed the severity of the injury.

“Ellyse sustained a high-grade right hamstring injury that is expected to keep her out of the game for a significant period of time. We are currently exploring management options and will continue to support Ellyse through her recovery,” said Australian Team Doctor Pip Inge.

Ellyse Perry will remain a member of Australia’s 15-player squad, with no changes to be made. The injury is yet another blow for Australia who are also without their speedster Tayla Vlaeminck who suffered an injury on the eve of the tournament.

With the world’s best-ranked allrounder now out of the tournament, off-spinner Molly Strano or pace bowler Delissa Kimmince could find a spot in Australia’s playing eleven. Australia coach Matthew Mott is confident the hosts have enough depth to cover the massive loss and stay on track for a world title defence.

“She gives her absolute all every time she takes to the field for her country and that was evident again against New Zealand in the selfless manner in which she threw herself into her batting, bowling and fielding performances,” Mott said in a statement.

“We’re confident that we have enough depth in the squad to cover her batting and bowling and know whoever gets an opportunity will make a strong contribution,” Mott added.
