After a forgettable campaign in IPL 2020, Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni has stated that the team might come up with a new core group for the next season of the tournament.
Chennai Super Kings’ journey ended on Sunday with a fine nine-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab. The MS Dhoni-led side finished the competition with six wins from fourteen games. This is the first time, the three-time champions missed out on a playoffs spot in the history of the IPL.
As far as the game against KXIP is concerned, CSK thoroughly dominated the contest. After MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl first, the bowlers came up with a fine show to restrict KXIP to 153 for 6 despite Deepak Hooda’s quickfire knock of unbeaten 62 from just 30 balls.
Need to change the core:
Speaking at the end of the game, MS Dhoni stated that CSK will play the new season with a new core, For years, the likes of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo and Faf du Plessis made the core of the team while in recent years, the likes of Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu were also an important member of the core.

It won’t be surprising if CSK indeed release the likes of Raina, Watson as well as Harbhajan Singh ahead of the next season’s auction. MS Dhoni also said that the assembling of the new team will also depend on the type of the auction.
“A lot depends on what the BCCI decides on the auction. We need to slightly change our core group and look for the next ten years. At the start of the IPL, we made a team and it served well for us,” said MS Dhoni.
“There comes a time where you have to shift a bit, change a bit and hand it over to the next generation. That’s what will be the policy, try to form a strong core group,” he added.
