Of late, the spin bowling in India got divided into two parts, wrist spin and finger spin. Though both of them are yielding results for the country, management went with the wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in the limited-overs. However, the pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are preferred in Tests.
Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal feels the emergence of Kuldeep Yadav and his selection in the Test squad is an exciting sign for the wrist spinners.
Kuldeep deserves every bit to be in the Test squad: Yuzvendra Chahal
The leg-break bowler furtherly felt the chinaman bowler, Kuldeep Yadav is the deserving candidate to play in the Test squad. He added the wrist spinners would be helpful even on the flat tracks as well.
Chahal went on to add that having a leg-spinner in the team will always be beneficial. However, he felt getting a wicket in the longer version of the game demands more skill than in limited-overs.
“Kuldeep deserves every bit to be in the Test squad. He has performed in the formats he has got a chance. Even on a flat wicket, a wrist spinner can be pretty effective. It’s a good sign that a leg-spinner is part of the Test squad in an away series. That is the trend worldwide,” Chahal said in an interview.
“In limited-overs, leg-spinners are often rewarded as batsmen go for big shots. In Tests, they don’t go after a bowler aggressively. A leg-spinner needs more planning in Tests. It is a bowler’s skill that gets him wickets in Tests,” Chahal said.
Two Spinners in the playing XI?
When asked about his view on adding two spinners in the playing XI, Yuzvendra Chahal said the pitches have been dry this time. Hence, he felt we might see a couple of spinners in the playing XI.
“Players like Virat, who have been on England tour before, said during the ODI series that the conditions this time were quite different. I found the pitches dry and could vary my pace. I think we can see two spinners in the playing XI later on in the series. It will all depend on the weather,” he said.
However, Kuldeep Yadav hasn’t been included in the first Test against England at Birmingham. However, he might get a chance when the action moves to Lords Cricket Grounds which offers ample assistance to spinners.
