Sachin Tendulkar, on Tuesday, said the determination to work upon his weakness has made Virat Kohli the batsman he is today.

Tendulkar was one of the few players who witnessed Kohli’s remarkable rise in the game from close quarters. The former India batsman was in the twilight of his career when Kohli made it to the team. Inconsistency, struggles against moving ball and hot-headedness – these attributes of Kohli would have convinced many that he was not going to make it big.

However, the current India skipper proved everyone wrong in style and Tendulkar watched it all. Kohli is arguably the best batsmen in the world right now and is well on his way to retire from the game as one of its biggest legends. And Tendulkar believes Kohli’s urge to work on his weakness played a key role in his meteoric rise.

“I could (always) see the hunger and the fire in his eyes. The best part about him is that the moment he realises there are areas he needs to work on he is immediately back in the nets working on those things,” Tendulkar said of Kohli.

“A player can only move forward if he accepts – and it requires a lot to accept and admit: ‘Okay, these are the areas where I have not done well and I need to go out and change these things’,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying by ‘Sky Sports’.

Kohli is one of the few players in the world right not to have an exceptional record across all format.

In 66 Tests so far, Kohli has scored 5,554 runs at an average of 53.40. In 211 ODIs, he has scored 9,779 runs at an average of 58.20 and has 2,102 runs to his name in 62 T20Is.

At just 29, he has hit a staggering 56 international tons. 35 of those have come in ODIs, making him the second highest centurion behind only Tendulkar. He also has six double centuries to his name, joint-most by an Indian.

Meanwhile, Tendulkar further advised Kohli to continue the way he prepares before a match and not to be bothered about the ups and downs in his form. He also said that the 29-year old is in a good space ahead of the upcoming England series.

“He is in a good space. All he needs to do is try and be in the same space. His method of preparing himself before a tour, before a game is really nice. He should continue with that. There are going to be ups and downs, there could be bad tours, but that’s not the end of the world,” he said.
