On Wednesday (August 1) It was Team India speedster Mohammed Shami, who provided a great spell after the lunch interval on the opening day of the first Test against India to bring the visitors back into the game. He bagged the wickets of Keaton Jennings and Dawid Malan in quick succession to peg the hosts back.
Earlier in the day it was England skipper Joe Root, who won the toss and opted to bat. The pitch looked well suited for the batters and the English openers started off quite fluently.
The Indian fast bowlers Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma didn’t begin particularly well. Umesh, in particular, swayed all over the stumps and was not able to pitch the ball in the right areas on a consistent basis.
Cook and Keaton Jennings made full use of the loose bowling and got off to a pretty steady start. However, it was off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who castled Cook with a peach of a delivery. The ball spun sharply and hit the top of the off stump.

Jennings and skipper Joe Root build up a solid partnership to put the visitors under some pressure. They went to lunch on 85 for one.
However, it was a great spell from Mohammed Shami in the early part of the post-lunch session where he bagged two important wickets. Keaton Jennings was pretty unfortunate to be dismissed bowled.
Mohammad Shami traps Dawid Malan in front of the wickets:
Malan played away from his stumps to a short of length delivery. It was nowhere to the stumps but after getting the edge the ball spun towards the stumps and disturbed the timbers.
The next wicket of Malan was more of a success to the bowler. It was a short of length delivery which skidded on the surface.
The ball struck Malan bit higher in the pads. However, the on-field umpire ruled it in favour of the visiting team.
Malan after consulting Root opted to go for the upstairs. However, the replays showed that it was umpire’s call on both impact and hitting.
Hence, the onfield umpire stayed with his call. England is currently 162 for three in 52.3 overs with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow in the middle.
