England skipper Joe Root got off to a steady start in England’s second innings on day three of the fourth Test against India at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. But yet again he gave away his wicket after getting off to an excellent start. Attempting for a run with Ben Stokes, Root fell inches short of his crease when the direct hit from Mohammad Shami send him back to the pavilion.

It was a brilliant piece of fielding by an unlikely player. Shami is never one of the swiftest players on the field. However, on this occasion, he didn’t disappoint his captain Virat Kohli.

Well, that was a much-needed wicket at a crucial juncture of the game. Root played well. He scored 48 runs while striking some gorgeous shots during his knock and looked well set for a big score.

Joe Root batted sensibly before his dismissal:

However, Shami after getting two wickets himself provided the much-needed breakthrough in the form of a run-out. England began the day’s play on six for no loss. Openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings were short of runs and required a substantial start.

After a 24-run stand, it was Jasprit Bumrah, who induced a false shot from the blade of Alastair Cook as he was caught yet again in the slip cordon.

Ishant Sharma dismissed Moeen Ali who was promoted up the order. It was a great low catch from KL Rahul which gave India the second wicket. Then there was a great partnership from there on, by captain Root and Jennings.

However, it was Shami who provided the much-needed breakthrough of Jennings just before the lunch interval was taken.

He came back to dismiss Jonny Bairstow with a peach of an inswing delivery which breached his defence. The fifth wicket was the most important as far as India was concerned.

England will now look to set India a target of more than 200.
