The former cricketer of England, Darren Gough is the latest one to react on Alastair Cook following his poor outings against India.
In his column for Yorkshire Post, Darren Gough cited the reference of the statement from England skipper, Joe Root. He said that it was not pleasing for him to listen to such words from Root in which he said, “it is down to Alastair Cook when he retires from playing for England.”

While shedding light on the statement, Gough feels that it basically says that no matter how many times Cook fails, he will still find the place.

“Cook knows the score. For me he is a cricketer who needs to play a lot of games with his technique. Central contracts has been great for him, it has given him longevity and 159 Tests.”

While stressing over the formulation of plans, Gough feels that selectors should build plan. He said that England team will act as a minnows if James Anderson, Staurt Broad and Alastair Cook retired in a same go.

Gough warned England that it may end up becoming Australia if such thing happened. Australia lost the setting especially in Test format after the senior cricketers retired in a one go.

“We all want Alastair to go out on a high. I have know him a long, long time; he is a terrific bloke and great player. But he is not getting runs. Trevor Bayliss says he is not getting runs but is not out of nick. But isn’t not getting runs being out of nick?”

Gough said that it is right to call that numbers of Alastair Cook are dipping. He said there is no doubt that Cook has an average of 45.11 but that is going down with every passing inning.

“His statistics are pretty good, although they are dipping, being honest. 159 Tests at an average of 45.11 with 32 hundred and England’s leading Test run-scorer of all time with 12,225 runs. It is a remarkable record.”
