England vs West Indies 2020, 2nd Test, Day 5 – Twitter Reactions
Updated - 21 Jul 2020, 01:01 AM
England have come roaring back into the three-match #raisethebat Wisden Trophy, beating the West Indies by 113 runs to assume parity in the series.
West Indies didn’t get off to the best of starts in the post-Tea session as Chris Woakes trapped Shane Dowrich LBW for a three-ball duck.
Skipper Jason Holder blunted 12.3 overs alongside Shamarh Brooks [62] before the latter was trapped leg-before wicket by Sam Curran. Dom Bess was carted for a four and six off consecutive deliveries by Jason Holder but the off-spinner had the last laugh as he produced a perfect delivery to bowl the Windies captain through the gates on the middle-stump.
Alzarri Joseph’s adventurous strokeplay once again proved to be his undoing as he slashed straight to point to leave West Indies nine down. And, the moment finally came when Dom Bess dismissed Kemar Roach courtesy a screamer from Ollie Pope to give England a well-deserved 113-run win.

Ben Stokes blitz helped England time the declaration perfectly
Earlier, Ben SUPERSTAR Stokes showed every facet of outrageous talent during the course of this Test match. And, just as everyone expected, the MVP was at his absolute best on the 5th and decisive day.
England needed quick runs which is exactly what Stokes provided them with on the 5th morning. The southpaw scored 62 runs off 39 balls at a run-rate of 9.54 today and ensured that England take too many overs to scale the 300-run-mark, even as the West Indians-led by their captain Jason Holder employed what many called delay tactics with regards to their usage of the DRS.
Stokes finished at an unbeaten 78 off 57 deliveries as England plundered 92 runs in 11 overs before eventually calling curtains on the innings.
England’s Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes leave Windies top-order in tatters before Jermaine Blackwood and Shamarh Brooks consolidated for the West Indies
Broad proved why he is such an irresistible force on English soil. The right-hander consistently bowled it on a fullish length before bringing in one back in to either bamboozle the stumps or pin the batsman in front of the wickets.
While Shai Hope suffered the former, Roston Chase endured the latter when he was pinned in front of the wickets with a nip-backer.
England missed an opportunity to remove Brooks when he appeared to have edged a Chris Woakes delivery straight to Jos Buttler but Joe Root decided against the review.
Blackwood stroked an 88-ball 55, stitching a 100-run-stand with Brooks before Ben Stokes once again proved to be the partnership-breaker for England when he bounced out Blackwood at the stroke of Tea as Jos Buttler completed a brilliant diving catch.

It will be a great finale to this Series! Looking ? forward to the 3rd Test already!#ENGvWI pic.twitter.com/Ck5ZFW3nqP— Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) July 20, 2020
Ben Stokes batting avg in the series is 114.33 and bowling avg is 16.33.
The difference of 98.00 is third highest in a Test series for any all-rounder who batted 500 balls & bowled 50 overs in the series. Only behind Kallis (113.80 vs WI, 2003) and Botham (98.77 vs Ind, 1982).

Stokes gets the breakthroughs too. I think he is being wasted on a cricket ground. In this form, he'll probably find a vaccine for Covid!

DRS is like a whim now. I'm bored…. maybe I'll have a coffee…..or a piece of chocolate…..or maybe a review? Yes, I fancy a review…..let:s have one! Anyone else wants one?

Selection drama, a comeback virtuoso performance, dull blocking, breathtaking-hitting, quintessential English swing, mesmerising spin, stupid dropped catches, Caribbean flair, a heroic single-man effort, referral controversy, last hour drama. #ENGvWI All wishes fulfilled?

If Ben Stokes and Jason Holder played in one team – the rest of the 9 players could retire at the start of play and still land up on the winning side.#ENGvWI

Excellent bowling from Dom Bess. He's struggled at times in this Test, but when he's found spin, he's been dangerous.
Of the 197 balls he's bowled, his two wickets came from the two balls with the 8th and 6th most deviation. #ENGvWI

Feel that Bess has missed out so far in this series. While Roston Chase has enjoyed a good series, Dom Bess yet to take advantage of a decent turning surface with bounce at Old Trafford #ENGvsWI

Stokes is a monster. Has played it perfectly for England. Why haven't they declared? West Indies won't mind….

In this game, Ben Stokes has scored 254 of the 443 runs while he has been at the crease (and been dismissed once). He scored his slowest Test century, then the fastest Test fifty by an England opener. What a player.

100 Test wickets for Chris Woakes … and in his 34th Test.
Now has 100 wickets and 1,000-plus runs. By way of comparison, it took Jason Holder 39 Tests to reach this mark, Andrew Flintoff 43, Ben Stokes 43, Garry Sobers 48…

The best. Stokes or Botham. Which one, and why.
— (((Dan Hodges))) (@DPJHodges) July 20, 2020
Stokes is now a better batsman, Botham (to date) edged it as a bowler. Both equally great fielders & popular in the dressing room. Botham marginally more dangerous in a drinking contest, Stokes just shading it when engaged in pugilism.
Both natural born winners & great blokes. https://t.co/ffqGTc2EdL— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 20, 2020
