The dramatic, unconventional 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand is perhaps one of the greatest ODI contest ever played. After both the teams played out a draw in the stipulated 50 overs, a Super Over to separate the sides, again saw a similar result. However, England were handed the World Cup trophy, due to superior boundary count.

Revisiting the Super Over in the World Cup final, New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult conceded 15 runs. For England, Eoin Morgan selected Jofra Archer to defend the total, but a dramatic finish saw the Super Over tied. Morgan who has been captaining England since 2011 said Jofra Archer was an obvious option.

Morgan said that Archer was the obvious choice as he is one of the best death overs bowler in the world. He also added that the fast bowler in known to perform under high pressure situations and Archer has proved it in IPL and Big Bash League.

“I think the obvious answer to choosing Jofra to bowl the super over is that he is one of the best death bowlers in the world. Guys are exposed to perform under high-pressure situations and Jofra has proved at the IPL, Big Bash that he can deliver under pressure,” Morgan said during the ICC podcast titled ‘CWC Rewind’ with Ian Bishop and Nasser Hussain.

“He had played only a dozen of ODI games at that stage, every challenge he had come under, he had thrived to perform in such situations,” he added.

Morgan will next lead the English team in the ODI series against Ireland. He holds the record for leading England to most matches.

Morgan has led the team to 114 matches, winning 69 and losing 36, with a win per cent of above 65.
