Eoin Morgan registered his first victory as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, beating SunRisers Hyderabad in the super over. Eoin Morgan was there at the crease till the end to secure a nervy win as Rashid Khan did his level best to defend three runs in the super over. Following the victory, Morgan hailed Lockie Ferguson’s spell of bowling, which changed the course of the match.

SunRisers Hyderabad put Kolkata Knight Riders into bat after winning the toss as both the teams carried out two changes. Even after some hitting display by the likes of Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, and Rahul Tripathi, it seemed like the Knight Riders will fall short of a competitive total. However, Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik collected 58 runs off the final five overs to propel their side to 163. All-rounder Andre Russell could hit only nine runs.

SunRisers Hyderabad made a blazing start as Jonny Bairstow came to open alongside Kane Williamson. At the end of the powerplay, Lockie Ferguson struck with his first delivery, removing his Kiwi skipper and teammate Williamson. He got another breakthrough in the form of Priyam Garg following which Bairstow perished to Varun Chakravarthy.

David Warner held the innings together, coming at number four for the first time in IPL 2020. Nevertheless, the SunRisers captain could not get 17 runs off the last over and got only 16 despite Andre Russell’s short run-up. Lockie Ferguson followed his brilliant spell of bowling by conceding only two runs in the super over which Karthik and Morgan chased down with little difficulty.

Eoin Morgan began by lauding Lockie Ferguson, who put his everything on the line to help them register a victory. The English limited-overs skipper highlighted their competitiveness in this game, which was otherwise missing in the last two. Morgan went on to praise Andre Russell for coming back to deliver the 20th over and getting it down to the super over. He hopes to gain some momentum moving forward.

They’re nice to be part of, get a glimpse into what the guys are about. For Lockie to come in and perform in both phases was outstanding. We’ve been sort of striving to get wins out of the last couple of games, didn’t happen against Mumbai; today we were competitive. It’ll all depend on a lot of match-ups, what we think are the right dynamics at the time [the batting order]. Dre went off the field, we thought he was injured. He came back on and said he could bowl. I think he showed a lot of character to get us to the Super Over after not starting well. He’s a superstar player for us. Hopefully we an gather up some momentum after this,” Morgan told in the post-match presentation.
