South African captain Faf du Plessis, who scored a marvelous ton in the series opener at Kingsmead Durban, has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series and also the T20I series against India. Farhan Behardien has been called in as the replacement for the Proteas skipper.
This comes in as a huge blow for the host as earlier their ace batsman AB de Villiers was also ruled out of the first three matches of the series. This creates a huge void within the South African middle order which struggled against the Indian wrist spinning duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.
During the first ODI of the series, Du Plessis missed out during the later stages of the match with Indian almost winning it. During the press conference, he mentioned that his finger bothered him, therefore, was out of the field to tend his injury. He was hopeful about playing the second One-dayer.
It was found out that Faf du Plessis sustained a fracture in his finger which would take 3-6 weeks to heal. An assessment will be held on March 1 at Durban prior to the series against Australia. The announcement of the new captain for the South African side will be made on Sunday. Meanwhile, Heinrich Klaasen earned his maiden ODI call-up as a reserve ‘keeper’.
