At present, the entire world has come together to combat one cause – to defeat the Coronavirus. The pandemic has people around the globe on high alert, having spread on a lightning-fast mode ever since it emerged in late December last year. To cure patients battling the disease in Delhi, former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has vowed to donate INR 50 lakhs.

In another strong move, Gambhir has also promised to put behind bars those people, who break the quarantine rules, undoing the nation’s efforts to stop the deadly virus. The several States across the country has put certain districts and cities under lockdown to limit the damage. So far, India has recorded 471 cases with ten fatalities.

Gambhir, who quit cricket last year, turned his attention to politics. The southpaw wrote a letter to Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by vowing to give INR 50 lakhs to save the city and citizens from the disease for any equipment that may be needed in treatments. In his correspondence, he penned down whether he could be of further help too.

“In furtherance of the united effort to save our city and citizens from this pandemic, I would like to pledge Rs 50 lakh from my MPLAD fund for equipment that may be needed for Covid-19 treatment in state government hospitals. Kindly direct the officers in charge to let my office know about the requirements and please let me know if I could be off any other assistance.” the letter said as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The “Janta Curfew” on Sunday called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had witnessed millions of Indians staying back at home from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. However, there were some, who raced out on the streets after the duration at large, which defeats the purpose of social distancing. The retired cricketer stated that those violating the isolation rules would face harsh consequences.

“Khud bhee jayenge aur parivaar ko bhee leke jayenge, quarantine or jail (either you go to quarantine with family or you go to jail.” 

BCCI sends a strong message to the public to fight the virus:

The apex body of Indian cricket also joined the fray by conceding that while battling with the disease, one must follow all the guidelines of the government. BCCI’s Twitter handle further said that one must refrain from being a threat to society and they must seize the chance if they ever dreamed of playing for the millions.

“Don’t be a threat to society. We are at war for our existence, not for our livelihood. Follow the government’s lockdown guidelines,” he added. With the global death toll passing 15,000, 19 Indian states have announced lockdown. The Indian cricket board also advised citizens to stay at home. If you ever dreamed of playing for millions around the world, now is your chance.”
