Virender Sehwag says Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir might not bag a mega deal because of their age and fitness.

If Virender Sehwag’s words are anything to go by then, the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh might not see a big financial windfall in the upcoming auction of the Indian Premier League.

Citing his example, the swashbuckling opener, who represented Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab, said the lucrative league benefits the players financially which make the players feel secure and help them work more on their game and fitness. But while the league provides the players with a good opportunity to bag lucrative deals, Sehwag believes the players who are currently not a part of their nationals teams are unlikely to get mega deals.

“(The IPL) benefited me financially, because when I played for India, it was Rs 2 lakh per game, Test matches Rs five lakh a game and then suddenly in the IPL you get Rs 10-crore or Rs 12-crore contract and then you are financially secure and you can work more on fitness and perform for the IPL and India,” Sehwag told PTI.

“The moment you get dropped from India (the national squad), prices drop which we have seen in a lot of players. Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh (since) they are not playing for India, they did not get (Rs) 10 or 12 crore,” he added.

Well, Sehwag’s bold claim might become a reality when the auction takes place on January 27 and 28 in Bengaluru, but the past has seen some exception.

In 2015, Yuvraj was bought by the Delhi Daredevils for a sensational Rs 16 crore despite not being in the Indian team. But at the same time, one cannot deny the fact that the southpaw along with Gambhir and Harbhajan might not get big deals because of being on the other side of the 30s.
