Glenn Maxwell To Be Available For Australia's Tour Of South Africa

Australia’s talisman all-rounder Glenn Maxwell who had taken an indefinite break from the game due to mental issues will be available for selection for the upcoming tour of South Africa next month. The Australian team will play three T20Is and as many ODIs on the South African tour. Maxwell has been in sublime form while leading Melbourne Stars in the ongoing Big Bash League.

The right-hander has scored 316 runs at a staggering average of 79 and he is striking at 170.8 in the nine matches he has played. Stars are at the top of the points table after winning eight matches out of the nine they have played.

Maxwell is in prime form.

Furthermore, Maxwell has also delivered the goods with the ball as he scalped prized wickets of players like D’Arcy Short, David Miller, Alex Hales, and Usman Khawaja. Thus, Maxwell is at the peak of his prowess and he is going to be a pivotal cog in the Australian team for the T20 World Cup which will take place later in the year.

Maxwell hasn’t been in the best of forms in the ODI format but his T20I exploits are hard to ignore. He has the skills to turn the match on its head and will be a crucial player for Australia.

The all-rounder could not get selected for the tour of India and D’Arcy Short was named as the replacement when Sean Abbott was ruled out due to side strain.

Australia’s interim coach Andrew McDonald is confident that Maxwell will make a roaring comeback to the national colors.

“I wouldn’t have thought (Maxwell’s) far back in the (ODI) queue,” interim Australia coach Andrew McDonald told the Herald Sun.

“I think performances over the last sort of 12 months in 50-over cricket he probably hasn’t nailed it and left the door ajar.

“But in T20 cricket it would be a totally different conversation. You’d almost say he’d be front and center and one of the first people picked. It’s just a different format.”

“I’m sure that around the corner there’ll be some more white-ball 50-over cricket for Glenn Maxwell in the Australian unit, assuming there is an opportunity for him.

“But if these guys perform (in India) and make it hard for him to get back in then that’s a great problem to have as well.”

Australia will take on India in the first ODI at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today.
