There are very few characters as feisty as Harbhajan Singh on a cricket field. The hot-headed Punjab star rarely gives the opposition even an inch on the field. However, away from the field, the veteran spinner is a different character altogether.

He likes to make fun of his teammates, pull pranks and keeps people around him entertained with his brilliant sense of humour. Well, recently, he showed another facet of his personality that is bound to make everyone respect him even more. In a beautiful gesture, the off-spinner helped an ailing former cricketer, who was fighting for life.

Harman Harry, who played under-16 cricket for Punjab, was battling for his life after he developed fistula in his intestines. Harman approached Harbhajan and was not disappointed. Both Harbhajan and Harry played under-16 cricket together in the 1990s before their career took separate paths.

Harbhajan revealed that he did not even think twice upon knowing his old friend’s condition as he asked him to go ahead with the surgery without bothering about the money.

“He (Harman) somehow contacted me and told me about the trauma he was going through,” Harbhajan told India Today. “He was in desperate need of money and I told him to go ahead with the surgery and promised to take care of all the medical expenses. There’s nothing more important than a human life.”

“I had told him to forget about money and go ahead with his surgery from a well-equipped hospital and good experienced doctor,” he added.

Harman hailed Harbhajan for being such a true friend, calling him an angel for saving his life.

“I will remain indebted to him for life. He has proved what true friendship means. I had no money left with me, having spent all my savings on treatment in the last one year. Harbhajan came as an angel and has pulled me out from the jaws of death,” Harman said.

“When I got operated, the hospital got me to sign a piece of paper where it was mentioned that if something happens to me, the hospital or its staff will not be responsible. I can’t tell you how I have spent the last one year,” he added.

Harbhajan eventually ended up paying over two and half lakh rupees for the entire medical procedure and surgery.

The India star later took to Twitter to express his gratitude over being able to save a life, tweeting:
