Eoin Morgan has backed Jos Buttler to take over as England captain after he announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect on June 28, 2022. Morgan said that Buttler is perfect for the job as he commands respect from the group as a leader.
Morgan brought down the curtains on an excellent career in international cricket in which he played for both Ireland and England. He debuted for Ireland in ODIs in 2006, scoring 99 in his first match and then switched to England in 2009 and was part of the 2010 T20 World Cup-winning side.
He took over the captaincy of the limited-overs team just before the 2015 ODI World Cup and though the team had their worse outing, he along with coach Trevor Bayliss transformed the side completely and went on to win the 2019 World Cup at home.
He’s Been An Unbelievably Good Vice-Captain While I’ve Been Captain: Eoin Morgan On Jos Buttler
Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday and reports from the British media suggest that Buttler is next in line to take over as the skipper of the limited-overs team.
Speaking after his retirement announcement, Morgan told Sky Sports: “He’s done it before, on tours that I’ve missed or been injured for. He’s come straight in and that is a true test of how you hold the weight of each and every decision and how it impacts your performance. The evidence is there that it has never affected Jos.
Jos has been in charge, he’s been an unbelievably good vice-captain while I’ve been captain, and when he’s stepped in he’s been an exceptional leader. He obviously commands himself with the bat as one of the best players in the world, but also as a leader within the group, he commands tremendous respect.”
Jos Buttler is expected to take over as England captain in limited overs being the vice-captain for some time now.
