South African speedster Morne Morkel has announced that he will retire from all forms of international cricket following Australia’s tour of South Africa.
It came as a surprise to many, as Morkel was bowling well and had troubled the Indian batsmen during the recently concluded series. The lanky speedster has been an unsung hero for the Proteas over the last decade or so.
He always remained under the shade of a certain Dale Steyn. However, he always went about his business in an unfazed manner.
Even former Aussie skipper Steve Waugh conceded Morkel was one of the most underrated bowlers. However his teammate for a long time, Hashim Amla has regretted the fact he won’t be able to share the dressing room with Morkel anymore.
Taking to his twitter handle he wrote,
“I’m going to miss playing with this champion. #MyHero #Legend All the best Morne.. @mornemorkel65.

Meanwhile, Morkel conceded that it was a very tough decision to make.
“It was an extremely tough decision, but I feel the time is right to start a new chapter,” said Morkel. “I have a young family and foreign wife. The demanding international schedule has put a lot of strain on us. I have to put them first, and this decision will only benefit us going forward,” he added.
Morkel has been part of the South African Playing XI in 83 Tests, 117 ODI’s and 44 T20I’s. He has bagged 529 wickets across formats.
Morkel is just six wickets shy of his 300th Test wicket. The speedster will definitely back himself to come up with the goods and reach the landmark in his farewell series. Despite retiring from the international circuit, he will go on playing outside the international arena, as he feels that he still has a lot of cricket left in him.
“I still feel there is a lot of cricket left in me and I am excited for what lies ahead,” he added.
