The International Cricket Council has bid for Women’s cricket in Commonwealth Games of 2022 set to be played in Birmingham. After the conclusion of ICC Women World T20, the governing body has confirmed that it has proposed for Women T20 in the next edition of the Commonwealth Games.

The bid has been made in association with England and Wales Cricket Board. Thus, if the bid is accepted by the Commonwealth body, it would be a great upliftment for the women cricket. Meanwhile, Men cricket has made its only appearance in the Commonwealth in 1998, hosted by Kuala Lumpur. The South African team had gone on to win the gold medal.

Great initiative by ICC.

Thus, the application is made with a motive to inspire women and girls. It would help the girls who have taken up the sport around the globe.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said as per ICC Media Release, “Cricket and the Commonwealth are inextricably linked. In fact, almost perfectly aligned with 910 million of cricket’s one billion plus adult fans from Commonwealth countries. Creating a new partnership between women’s cricket and the Commonwealth Games demonstrates the commitment both organisations have to grow women’s sport and delivering greater equality, fairness and opportunity in sport across the Commonwealth.

“Birmingham is the perfect place to launch this partnership as the city shares cricket’s rich and diverse culture and heritage. 23 per cent of the city’s residents have links to cricket playing nations outside the UK, the deep connection between cricket and Birmingham will bring people together and inspire future generations of players and fans of women’s cricket. If cricket were to be staged in these Games, we know every team competing would be guaranteed ‘home’ support. There’s a ready-made audience and ready-made infrastructure in the local vicinity.

Women cricket has scaled new heights in the last five years and the women cricketers are also getting the appreciation they deserve. Hence, representing one’s country at the Commonwealth games will do a world of good for the Women players. Meanwhile, Australia was able to win their fourth World T20 title after defeating arch-rivals England in the final.
