Ex-New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull made a bold remark stating that hosts Australia should consider playing Kane Richardson instead of Pat Cummins to bring their T20 World Cup campaign back on track. The Kiwis humbled the defending champions Australia with a massive 89-run win in a T20 World Cup match on October 22.

Australia’s fast bowling unit, including the likes of Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, could not scalp a solitary wicket as the hosts conceded 200 runs. New Zealand’s Devon Conway (92 not out off 58) and Finn Allen (42 off 16) set the tone of the match for the 2021 runners-up before Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner shared six wickets to bundle out Australia for 111.

Australia should be wary of the performance of their bowling department, reckons Simon Doull

Doull said on ICC’s Digital Daily, “I think Australia would be concerned, I’d be concerned with some of the parts of the bowling. I said the other night in the warm-up match, I feel personally that Pat Cummins shouldn’t be playing in this T20 side.”

“I think Kane Richardson should be playing. I feel that he offers them a few variations that they just don’t have. It’s same-same. It’s pace on, pace on, pace on. Starc, (Josh) Hazlewood, Cummins – they don’t have a really good change-up bowler.”

Richardson was part of Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup winning squad but didn’t feature in the playing XI in any match last year in the UAE.

Doull concluded saying, “That’s a drubbing, that is a proper win and it really hurts Australia’s net run rate for the future in the tournament, and it just helps New Zealand enormously. I gave them about an 80/20 chance of winning, or a 20 percent chance basically, but they surprised me.”
