Meanwhile, South Africa got off to a good start after Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne opted to bowl first. Hashim Amla and Aiden Markram got Proteas off to a flying start taking the Sri Lankan bowlers to the cleaners. Markram was more of the aggressor as he played a quickfire 21-run knock before getting out. Suranga Lakmal got Markram out against the run of play.

Striving at 47 for one,  skipper Faf du Plessis combined well with Amla to set the tone of the batsmen to follow. They rotated the strike with ease while the odd boundaries kept coming as the Lankan bowlers found it tough to make any inroads. Du Plessis guided South Africa to the 100-run mark with a four and a six in the 17th over before Avishka Fernando injured himself while fielding.

Isuru Udana bowled a good length delivery as Faf du Plessis creates some room for himself and crashes it to cover where the fielder tumbles and allows them to steal a single. Soon after it looked like Avishka Fernando has twisted his ankle as they physio came running. After the initial check-up, they decided not to risk him and take Fernando off.

Meanwhile, they had to call the stretcher onto the as the young cricketer was not able to walk properly. While the nature of the injury is still not known, Sri Lanka will hope that it is nothing serious.

However, Sri Lanka struck twice to remove Faf du Plessis and Hashim Amla to have South Africa 175 for three in 25.2 overs.
