Chris Woakes presented a brilliant display of bowling on a high-scoring encounter as England routed Pakistan 4-0 to complete their preparation ahead of the ICC World Cup 2019. Despite that, Woakes said he along with other English cricketers will be wary of the final selection phone calls for the marquee tournament.

Meanwhile, the selectors will name England’s final 15 for the World Cup on Tuesday morning. However, the players will get to know on Monday whether they have made the cut. During the post-match presentation at Leeds, Eoin Morgan said all 17 players will be considered, each having a legitimate shot at a World Cup place. But two of the phone calls will bring disappointment and with Jofra Archer all set to be in the squad, one player who has been a part of this transition have to sit outside and watch.

After his match-winning effort, Chris Woakes said that all the 17 players will be waiting for the phone call from the selectors. It is likely that Woakes has made his way to the final 15 as he stamped his credentials as the leader of the pace attack with a five-wicket haul.

“Everyone will be wary of that phone call,” he said. “Even if you feel like you’ve got a good chance to being in the squad until you hear it from selectors’ mouths, it’s not quite set in stone,” Woakes added.

Furthermore, Chris Woakes said that all the 17 players will be on the edge as they have performed at some point over the series. Woakes also said that he is happy not to be on the other sides as it is a very tough job on the part of the selectors. The all-rounder who returned with ten wickets in the series is confident that despite only 15 making it to the final squad, all the 17 players will have a role to play in the tournament due to nature of injuries and illness.

England will play Australia and Afghanistan in the warm-up games before playing South Africa in the World Cup opener on May 30 at the Oval.
