Indian National Cricket Team vice-captain Rohit Sharma leapfrogged former India skipper Sourav Ganguly in the list of most ODI centuries during his outstanding knock against South Africa on June 5 at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

Rohit acheives unique record

Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball to restrict South Africa to 228 runs. However, the Proteas were reeling at 135 for six before two crucial hands from Andile Phehlukwayo, and Chris Morris helped them post 200+ runs on the board. Morris topped the scoring chart with 42 runs while Chahal picked four while Bumrah picked two in their debut World Cup match to set the tone for India.

Rohit Sharma set the tone for the run-chase with an outstanding century leading the scheme of things from the front. However, Kagiso Rabada provided an early impetus removing Shikhar Dhawan with a beautiful delivery. Since then, skipper Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and MS Dhoni supported Rohit in tandem to set their priorities in the biggest cricketing extravaganza.

With the 23rd century, Rohit Sharma leapfrogged Sourav Ganguly to occupy the ninth spot in the list of most centuries by a batsman in ODI. Former Sri Lanka cricketer Kumara Sangakkara leaves Rohit behind with two hundred while former India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar leads the chart with 49 centuries. Current India skipper Virat Kohli is the second best with 41 and looks in line to break Tendulkar’s record which looked impossible at one stage.
