India’s leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal had a World Cup debut to remember when he took the field against South Africa in the eighth match of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. Chahal was right on the money as he scalped four wickets and gave away 51 runs in his quota of 10 overs. The leg-spinner bowled with skill and breathed down the neck of the Proteas batsmen.

Chahal’s first victim was Rassie van der Dussen when the right-hander attempted a reverse sweep against the leg-spinner. However, the right-hander could not get a connection with the ball. Yuzvendra Chahal was also able to send back South African skipper Faf du Plessis when he was able to find the gap between bat and pad of the right-hander to hit the stumps.

Chahal had another wicket in his bag when David Miller gave him a return catch to get dismissed on 34 runs. Furthermore, the leg-spinner was able to bag the wicket of Andile Phehlukwayo when the southpaw batsman charged down the wicket in an attempt to hit Chahal out of the park. However, the left-hander could not get the connection and MS Dhoni did the rest behind the stumps.

Thus, Chahal now has the second-best bowling figures for India on the World Cup debut. India’s gun fast bowler Mohammed Shami had scalped 4-35 against Pakistan at Adelaide in the 2015 World Cup in his maiden World Cup match.

Moreover, former right-handed pacer Debashish Mohanty had taken 4-56 against Kenya at Bristol in the 1999 World Cup in his first World Cup match.

Furthermore, Chahal’s 4-51 is the fifth best bowling figures for India in a World Cup match. Hence, Chahal joined the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Anil Kumble and Ravichandran Ashwin. Yuvraj Singh has the best bowling figures as he had taken 5-31 against Ireland in Bangalore in the 2011 World Cup.
