Australia’s start to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was dismal as they suffered a crushing defeat in the first Test in Nagpur, where India won by an inning and 132 runs. Despite undertaking specialized practice sessions on scuffed-up pitches in Alur, Bengaluru, and Sydney, both their batters and spinners looked lackluster in comparison to their Indian counterparts.

Australia’s team selection was questionable as they left out the in-form Travis Head, who could have provided useful off-spin. Despite having a left-arm spinner in Ashton Agar and a leg-spinner in Mitchell Swepson in the squad, they chose to give a debut to Todd Murphy, who nevertheless did an impressive job by taking 7 wickets on his debut.

I Don’t Think Australia Were Prepared Enough: Stuart Clark

Stuart Clark, the former Australian fast bowler, commented that the Pat Cummins-led team’s preparation was inadequate as they chose not to play any practice matches.

“I think the bit that gets me about it all is – and we talked about it before the series started – were they as well prepared as they could be? And the general consensus, if you talk to anyone on the street, is ‘no, they weren’t,”

“No practice game, no tour match, turn up … and got dusted in a manner people are pretty disappointed about. Say what you want, they got smoked. India are a pretty good team in their country, but I just don’t think they were prepared well enough,”

It will interesting to see the approach Australia takes heading into the next game. It seems improbable for Australia to modify their spin department unless they opt for three spinners, despite the addition of left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann to their squad before the second Test in New Delhi.
