Sri Lanka won the first ODI by seven wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series in Dharamsala. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first in the first ODI and Suranga Lakmal and Angelo Matthews’s heroics early in the Indian innings broke the backbone of Indian batting as the duo caused havoc in the Indian top order and the Indian team was bowled out for just 112 courtesy, MS Dhoni who scored 65.

Sri Lanka had a new captain in the form of Thisara Perera, and he had a fantastic start to his rejuvenated career a player and as a captain as his team pulled off a huge victory over world number one India. With this win, Sri Lanka ended their 12 match losing streak in ODI cricket.

Suranga Lakmal was adjudged the man of the match for his exceptional effort with the ball. Suranga Lakmal bowled ten overs on the trot, bowling four maidens, giving away 13 runs and picked up four wickets. Angelo Matthews bowled with the new ball and did not let the Indian batsmen cut lose early on. Upul Tharanga edged one to gully of a no-ball and made the most of the chance given to him and scored 49.

Danushka Gunathilaka- 1/10

Danushkha Gunathilaka failed to impress with the bat in the first ODI as he scored just one before edging one to Dhoni of Jasprit Bumrah.

Upul Tharanga- 8/10

Relieved of the captaincy duties, Upul Tharanga made a brilliant comeback to form as he scored 49 chasing a low score of 113.

Lahiru Thiriumanne- 1/10

Lahiru Thirimanne was castled by a beautiful delivery by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar for a duck.

Angelo Matthews- 9/10

All-rounder Angelo Matthews had a perfect game with both bat and ball as he picked up one wicket giving away just eight runs in five overs. He was unbeaten on 25 off 42 deliveries and was at the crease until the end.

Niroshan Dickwella- 8/10

Niroshan Dickwella had an almost perfect match with both gloves as well as the bat. He took two catches and affected one stumping. He scored the winning runs as he was unbeaten at 26 runs.

Asela Gunaratne- 1/10

Gunaratne was not directly involved in the match as he did not get an opportunity to bat in the match.

Thisara Perera (Captain) – 5/10

Newly appointed captain Thisara Perera had a perfect match as a captain as his bowlers delivered when the team needed the most. He picked up the wicket of MS Dhoni to end the Indian innings but was on the expensive side giving away 29 runs in 4.2 overs.

Sachith Pathirana- 5/10

On a pitch which had very little to offer for the spinners, Pathirana picked up a wicket of Bumrah and gave away just 16 runs in four overs.

Suranga Lakmal-9.5/10

Suranga Lakmal had a perfect match with the ball as he was adjudged the man of the match for his exceptional spell. He bowled 10 over on the trot and picked up four wickets giving away 13 runs. His spell included four maidens.

Akila Dhananjaya-5/10

Just like Pathirana bowled well and picked up a wicket of Kuldeep Yadav giving away seven runs in five overs.

Nuwan Pradeep- 7/10

Nuwan Pradeep picked up two wickets for 37 runs in his 10 overs and was instrumental in removing the Indian middle order.
