Indian cricket team skipper, Virat Kohli will undergo a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy on June 15 (Friday) ahead of the tour of Ireland and England.
Meanwhile, Kohli is missing from the Afghanistan Test due to a neck injury he sustained during IPL. As a result, he also dropped the County stint with Surrey for June.
He was desperate to play some cricket in England ahead of the extensive tour. Kohli has a poor record in England, the last time he toured in 2014. He had only 134 runs to his name in the five Test matches he played in that tour.
Kohli, however, received the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for his contributions to the Indian cricket. Moreover, this is the fourth time in his career he has received this illustrious honour; the most by any Indian cricketer. Current India coach Ravi Shastri presented the award to Kohli.
Last month, the BCCI’s medical team had suggested that Kohli should not travel to Surrey and rest for a while. With the England tour around the corner, the Board is in no mood to comprise with Kohli’s fitness.
“We want him fully fit for the England tour,” a senior BCCI official said.
While his team-mates will be battling it out against Afghanistan on the second day of the one-off Test match, Kohli will be aiming to trump the fitness test.
India will play two T20Is with Ireland before flying to England. There they will feature in three T20Is and ODIs each followed by a five-match Test series.
