Indian captain Virat Kohli’s record of winning on the home turf may have been good, but India have somewhat struggled in front of foreign hosts. After losing the recent series against New Zealand, questions have been raised on the Indian side.
After a 2–0 clean sweep at the hands of the hosts, captain Virat Kohli is on the target of critics.
From 2017 to 2020, let’s have a look at how many Test series defeats India had to face on a foreign tour:
India vs South Africa (2017/18)
India toured South Africa in the year 2017-18. In the three-match Test series played under Kohli’s captaincy, the hosts defeated the visitors 2–1.

Africa defeated the visitors by 72 runs in the first Test played in Cape Town.
The Proteas won the second Test at Centurion by 135 runs.
However, in the third Test played in Johannesburg, the sub-continent side saved their honour and won by 63 runs.
During the tour, African bowler Lungi Engidi displayed a great performance. He also took six wickets in the second Test.
India vs England (2019)
This Test series began in August 2019 and lasted till September 2019. England defeated the visitors 4–1 in a five-match series. Captain Joe Root’s team thrashed Kohli and his men throughout the series.

England won by 31 runs in the first Test played in Buckingham.
While, in the second Test which was played in the city of London at Lord’s, the Men in Blue were defeated an innings and 159 runs by the hosts.

India vs New Zealand (2020)
Everyone is aware of the poor manner in which the sub-continent side played in the recently-held tour of New Zealand.
In the two-match Test series, the hosts eliminated the visitors with a clean sweep of 2–0. The Kiwis won the first Test by a comprehensive margin of 10 wickets at Wellington.

The second game played at Christchurch was no different than the series opener.
The visiting batsmen failed to take the team to a challenging total in the first innings. However, the bowlers kept the match alive as they handed the visitors a lead of seven runs in the first innings.
However, the Indian batsmen displayed another disappointing show in the second innings as they were bundled up for 124 runs and the Kiwis won the game comprehensively by seven wickets.
