However, earlier in the day, India skipper, Virat Kohli elected to bat first after winning the toss. The opening batsman, KL Rahul couldn’t start the innings well, as he scored a four-ball duck. India lost their first wicket in the very first over of the match. Meanwhile, India debutant, Prithvi Shaw and veteran batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara held up their nerves and started scoring runs for India.
Shaw played a fantastic inning, and he also made his maiden half-century in the debut match. He scored 50 runs from 56 balls including seven boundaries. Prithvi is also the third youngest player to make an inaugural Test fifty and the fifth batsman for India to score the fastest fifties on Test debut by balls.

However, Cheteshwar Pujara made a good comeback after the England Tests where he only managed to score a century and a half-century from the eight innings that he had played.
Pujara scored unbeaten 74 balls 56 including nine boundaries. The veteran Pujara and the debutant Shaw both partnered well, scoring 130 runs of their bat and India posted a total of 133 runs for the loss of one wicket before day one lunch.
