Five Indian Cricketers Who Broke Into The Indian Team After Successful IPL Stints

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has proved as a blessing and has received admirations for plenty of nations for several reasons. Having begun in 2008, the tournament has established as the baby steps for some of the top-notch Indian cricketers today.

Several Indian cricketers have broken into the national team post a productive time with the franchises. The competition gives them a taste of how unforgiving international cricket could be at times. Hence, a few of them enjoyed successful stints that enabled them to book their spot in the Indian team.

We take a look at five Indian cricketers who solidified their spot after superlative IPL stints:

Ravichandran Ashwin:

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is a crafty operator, especially in Test cricket. At present, he is India’s first-choice spinner in the longest format. Ashwin received his debut for the national team on the back of his imperious performances for the Chennai Super Kings.
The 33-year old was pivotal to CSK’s title triumph in 2010 and 2011.

In 2010, Ravichandran Ashwin snapped 13 wickets in 12 games at an economy rate of 6.10. He followed up with 20 scalps in the subsequent season at 19.40 and an economy rate of 6.16. The same year, the finger spinner made his Test debut and took a six-wicket haul. In 71 Tests so far, Ashwin has claimed 365 victims at 25.43.

Yusuf Pathan:

Yusuf Pathan was part of the Indian team even before the IPL came into being. The swashbuckling all-rounder was part of India’s squad in their victorious campaign of the 2007 ICC World T20. However, his exploits in the cash-rich tournament in the 2008 and 2009 that boosted his selection case. Pathan was crucial to Rajasthan Royals’ success in the inaugural edition of the IPL.

It was the Baroda-born’s strike rates, maintaining over 130s that made him a favourable prospect. Yusuf Pathan remained a constant fixture in the men in blue’s lower order in limited-overs cricket. Being an all-rounder, Yusuf could also bowl useful overs of off-spin and buy a wicket out of nowhere. Sadly, the 37-year old fell out of the selectors’ radar, having played his last game in 2012.

Hardik Pandya:

Hardik Pandya made a strong case for his selection after his first season of the tournament itself. Being part of three successful seasons with the Mumbai Indians, Pandya has contributed to the team’s cause in all the facets on more than one occasions. He made his IPL debut in 2015. With the ball, he is no mug either, blessed with the ability to mix it up consistently and buy wickets out of nowhere.

The 26-year old’s hard-hitting ability and the skill to hit sixes as well guaranteed him a selection in their tour of Australia in 2016. Although plenty of injuries have hindered his career in a lot of stages, Hardik Pandya has made his chances count every time he donned the national colours.

Jasprit Bumrah:

Presently the spearhead of India’s fast-bowling attack in all the formats, Jasprit Bumrah made his debut for India in 2016. That year in the IPL, Bumrah took 15 wickets in 14 matches for Mumbai Indians at a miserly economy rate of 7.81. It was mainly his ability to bowl yorkers consistently that attracted the Indian selectors.

Ever since that, the right-arm lanky pacer has not only been effective for India but raised his performance for Mumbai Indians too. In ODIs and T20Is, the 26-year old possess an economy rate of 4.56 and 6.67 respectively with a good amount of wickets. In 2018, Bumrah went on to make his Test debut.

Yuzvendra Chahal:

Yuzvendra Chahal most productive years in the IPL were of 2015 and 2016 with Royal Challengers Bangalore. With 23 and 22 wickets at 18.04 and 18.23, the Harayana-born leggie knocked hard on the selectors’ doors. Chahal’s strongest suit is T20 cricket in which he has 55 wickets from 42 games for India.

The 55 scalps have come at an average of 24.35, including a six-wicket haul, which he took against England in 2016. It wasn’t until India’s loss in the 2017 Champions Trophy that Yuzvendra Chahal became a regular fixture in the side. Along with Kuldeep Yadav, Chahal has bowled several match-winning spells in limited-overs cricket.
