Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the successful sports leagues at present. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched this yearly tournament in 2008, and since then it has been played with immense popularity.

Six or over-boundary is one of the most exciting parts in every cricket format, especially in T20 cricket. The IPL fans daily witness a huge number of sixes. At the end of every IPL season, the leader of most sixes wins the Maximum Sixes Award.

Here we are briefly discussing the total number of sixes in every IPL season.

 

IPL 2008

IPL 2008 was the inaugural edition of the tournament where eight teams participated, and a total of 59 matches were played. A total of 95 batsmen hit sixes in that inaugural IPL edition. At the end of that tournament, the total number of sixes tally went to 619. Mumbai Indians (MI) cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya (31 sixes) won the Maximum Sixes Award in that IPL edition.

IPL 2009

South Africa hosted the entire IPL 2009 where eight teams featured, and the total number of matches was 59. While a total of 73 batsmen hit sixes in that edition, the total number of sixes was 442. Deccan Chargers (DC) won that tournament and their captain Adam Gilchrist won the Maximum Sixes Award after hitting 29 sixes in that edition.

Eight teams participated in the IPL 2010 where the total of number matches was 60. The total number of sixes in that tournament was 582, and a total of 88 batsmen made contributions to this. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Robin Uthappa won the Maximum Sixes Award who hit 27 sixes in that tournament.

IPL 2011

In the IPL 2011, ten teams participated, and 74 matches were played. The Royal Challengers Bangalore cricketer Chris Gayle won the Maximum Sixes Award after hitting 44 sixes in that edition. Meanwhile, a total of 97 batsmen hit sixes in that edition while the total number of six was 638.

A total of nine teams participated in IPL 2012, but the number of matches in that tournament was 76. In that competition, the total number of sixes was 727 while a total of 100 players hit sixes. The RCB cricketer Chris Gayle retained the Maximum Sixes Award as he hit the record number of 59 sixes.

IPL 2013 was the similar format of its previous edition as nine teams participated and the total number of matches was 76. A total of 95 batsmen smashed sixes in that edition as the total number of sixes in that tournament was 674. The RCB player Chris Gayle once again won the Maximum Sixes Award after hitting 51 sixes.

IPL 2014

The UAE hosted the first half of the IPL 2014 while India hosted the last half of the tournament. This time eight teams featured in this competition and the total match number was 60. The Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) cricketer Glenn Maxwell won the Maximum Sixes Award who hit 36 sixes in that tournament. On the other hand, 85 batsmen hit sixes in that edition while the total number of sixes was 714.

IPL 2015 was the exact similar format of IPL 2014. A total of 89 cricketers hit over-boundaries in that competition, and the total number of sixes was 692. The Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Chris Gayle regained the Maximum Sixes Award after hitting 38 sixes in that tournament.

Just like the previous two editions, eight teams competed in the IPL 2016, and the total match number was 60. In that tournament, 93 batsmen hit a total of 638 sixes. The RCB captain Virat Kohli (38 sixes) hit the most number of sixes in that edition and won the Maximum Sixes Award.

Once again, the eight teams participated in the tenth IPL edition, while the total number of matches was 60. The total number of over-boundaries in that edition was 705, and a total of 93 different players contributed to that. The KXIP batsman Glenn Maxwell (26 sixes) won his second Maximum Sixes Award after finishing as the joint most six hitters in that tournament (David Warner also hit 26 sixes).

IPL 2018 followed the same number of teams (eight) and matches (60) like its last four editions. A total of 93 batsmen hit sixes in that tournament, and the total number of sixes in that competition was a whopping 872. The Delhi Daredevils (DD) cricketer Rishabh Pant won the Maximum Sixes Award after hitting 37 sixes in that tournament.

Eight teams participated in the IPL 2019. After the end of all 60 matches in this season, a total of 91 batsmen hit a total of 784 sixes. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) cricketer Andre Russell won the Maximum Sixes Award who hit 52 sixes in this season.
