Defending Champions Mumbai Indians (MI) made an early exit from Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL) 11 after losing their last group game against the Delhi Daredevils (DD) by 11 runs. They required winning the last match in order to join Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the playoffs.

It must be noted that Mumbai is still the most successful side in the tournament. They have won the tournament in 2013, 2015 and 2017 and who knows 2019 might turn out to be the year for Mumbai given their record.

It was Mumbai’s eighth defeat of the tournament. With Mumbai’s loss, Rajasthan Royals (RR) became the final team to go through to the playoffs.

Chasing a target of 175, Mumbai lost Suryakumar Yadav in the opening over after smashing a six and a four of the first couple of deliveries. Mumbai lost a cluster of wickets in the middle overs which prevented them from going past the target.

Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane were the wreckers in chief for Delhi as they bagged three wickets each. It was an exceptional piece of bowling by the leg-spinning duo as they waved magic around the Mumbai batsmen.

However, there was a good partnership between skipper Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya which revived the hopes of Mumbai.

Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya’s dismissal proved to be the final nail in the coffin

However, both wickets fell in quick succession. Rohit was dismissed in an attempt to play a big shot. It was also the same case with Hardik. It was a well-flighted delivery from Mishra. Hardik went for a heave and mistimed it. The ball went straight up in the air and was safely grabbed by Rahul Tewatia in the point region.

Following the dismissal of Pandya, a Mumbai Indians cheerleader dropped an F-bomb which was described by Scott Styris as the “best moment of the IPL.” Rohit also expressed his disappointment following Mumbai’s loss.

However, he hoped that Mumbai Indians would come back stronger in the next year.
