IPL 2018: Twitter Reacts as Delhi Daredevils Beat Rajasthan Royals in a Thriller
Updated - 03 May 2018, 09:10 AM
Delhi Daredevils (DD) oversaw a tough fight from Rajasthan Royals (RR) to register a much-needed win in a rain-curtailed game. The Shreyas Iyer-led side beat the Royals by four runs to get back to winning ways owing to the Duck-Worth Lewis Method (DLS).
In a rain-truncated game, chasing a revised total of 151 in just 12 overs, the Royals started with Jos Buttler and D’Arcy Short. The duo started brightly, adding 22 runs off the first two overs.
Buttler was the aggressor during the stand, hitting three sixes and a four to race away to 25 off the first 10 balls he faced.
In the third over of the innings, he hit Avesh Khan for three sixes and a four – to set the tone for the chase.
Royal reached the 50-run mark in just the fourth over as they got the start they needed to chase down the huge total.
Buttler soon reached his fifty off just 18 balls. At the end of the halfway mark, Royals were 79 for no loss. The carnage finally ended when Amit Mishra dismissed the wicketkeeper-batsman for 67.
The knock came off just 26 balls and was studded with four fours and seven sixes.
On the other end, Short’s woeful IPL continued as he found it tough to get going.
Buttler’s wicket helped Delhi claw their way back in the game as they stopped the flow of runs.
Trent Boult then dismissed Sanju Samson for three to reduce the Royals to 92 for two.
The Royals crossed the 100-run mark in the ninth over. Their chase then received a big blow when Ben Stokes returned to the hut after scoring just one, leaving his side reeling at 100 for three.
Short then hit Glenn Maxwell for three consecutive sixes – to revive the chase before being dismissed on the next ball for 44.
The equation was finally down to 15 off the last over and Boult went on to defend the runs. Royals were eventually restricted to 146 for five.
Earlier in the game, Daredevils’ batsmen fired on all cylinders to guide them to a daunting total of 196 for six.
The hosts were off to the worst possible start. Dhawal Kulkarni dismissed Colin Munro for a first ball duck.
However, the in-form duo of Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer did not let the visitors capitalise on the fine start. Both the players were matching each other shot for shot to lay the foundation for a good total.
During the powerplay, it was all about Shaw. The first two overs yielded just six runs before Shaw decided to take on Kulkarni.
In the third over, he slammed his state teammate for a six and four to collect 16 runs. That over provided the impetus to the innings.
Well, in the fifth over, Shaw hit Jaydev Unadkat for a six and two fours to help Delhi finish the powerplay on 48 for 1.
In the very next over, it was Iyer’s turn to do the hitting as he hit Shreyas Gopal for two sixes as Delhi’s innings was up and running.
Gopal the ended the stand by dismissing Shaw against the run of play. The opening batsman scored 47 off 25 including four fours and as many sixes.
But even Shaw’s dismissal did not bring any respite for the Royals. New batsman Rishabh Pant started firing right from the word go, hitting 2 sixes and a four in the first 10 balls he faced.
Delhi entered the three-digit in the 11th over. On the other hand, Iyer was also doing his scoring at a good pace as Delhi looked primed for a huge total. Both Iyer and Pant reached the fifties in quick succession.
Pant was the first to reach the landmark off just 23 balls while Iyer took 34 balls. At the end of the 14th over, the scoreboard was reading 160 for two.
The partnership eventually ended when Unadkat dismissed Pant for 50.
Moreover, Unadkat struck again to remove Pant, much to the relief of his team. The southpaw scored 69 off just 29 balls.
Delhi Daredevils could not finish strongly but the early carnage helped them post a daunting total.

Prithvi Shaw wasn't an early pick in the playing XI, but now he simply can't be kept out. Amazing strokeplay by the young man from Mumbai

Only thing Prithvi Shaw needs is to to get married to a bollywood girl to be the next Kohli. Admit it.
