Ellyse Perry is expected to be available for the final of the ongoing 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup. In the first semi-final of the tournament, when Australia faced West Indies, the experienced batter retired hurt, which left her uncertain for the summit clash.
Ahead of the final, which will be on Sunday against either England or South Africa, the head coach of the Australia Women’s cricket team, Shelley Nitschke, has provided some hints over Ellyse Perry’s chances to play in the final match of the tournament.
Ellyse Perry retired hurt against West Indies in the semis
As per the media reports, Ellyse Perry’s injury against West Indies, for which she had to leave the field, was not serious enough. As the Australian cricket team wanted to protect one of their top talents, they decided to take her off the field.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Nitschke said there was no definitive update on Perry as the team did not conduct any practice sessions since the semi-final match. The head coach is hopeful about the batter’s playing chances in the grand finale, as team selection can be influenced by the caliber of a match. As the upcoming match is going to be a title decider, the Aussies will try their best to name the strongest possible playing combination, whether it is England or South Africa as the opposition team.
“Yeah, potentially,” Shelley Nitschke said in a brief reply when she was asked about Perry’s future ahead of the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup Final.

The head coach further emphasised that Ellyse Perry would like to work on some other things as well to polish her all-round performance on the ground. Keeping the significance of the match in mind, from fielding to running between the wickets, players are expected to put in some hard drills in the lead-up to the summit clash.
“I think there's still certain things that she wants to be able to do as well, [to] be able to still contribute to the team and hold her own, whether that's in the field or running between the wickets. But there is that element of, this is a World Cup final, so what's our tolerance there? So certainly a slightly different lens than perhaps some other times,” the head coach of Australia’s women’s cricket team said.
Ellyse Perry has played multiple match-turning knocks for Australia
Ellyse Perry, who is now 35, will try her best to cement her legacy by playing and winning the T20 World Cup final for the national side. In 2020, she missed the final because of an injury. She will definitely want to repeat that, and so will the team.
Currently, in the ongoing title race, the star batter is one of the leading forces which looks Australia superior as a team, against all of the opponents they have faced so far in the journey since the first match of the group stage.
She is currently the leading run scorer of the team with 185 runs at 46.25 and a strike rate of 135.03, including half-centuries against Pakistan and India.
