The much-awaited player retention ahead of this month’s mega-auction for the Indian Premier League finally took place on Thursday (January 4).

Well, retentions were pretty on the expected lines, but there were also some big surprises from the eight franchises as they look to build a strong squad ahead of the eleventh season of the tournament. Defending champions Mumbai Indians have retained Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah while Sunrisers Hyderabad have retained their talismanic skipper David Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The Hyderabad-based franchise, however, sprung a big surprise by not retaining their star opener Shikhar Dhawan.

Similarly, Kolkata Knight Riders have surprisingly not retained Gautam Gambhir who led them to two IPL titles. Instead, the two-time winners have retained their highest wicket-taker Sunil Narine and Andre Russell who could not play the last season due to the ban he was serving for a doping violation.

Inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals have retained just one player in the form of Australia skipper Steve Smith who had led Rising Pune Supergiant to the final last season. Kings XI Punjab have also retained only one player – Axar Patel. Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have retained MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja while Delhi Daredevils have retained Rishabh Pant, Chris Morris, and Shreyas Iyer.

Some notable names who missed out on being retained are hard-hitting Australian Chris Lynn, Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Yuzvendra Chahal among many others. Well, the team will have the option to buy some of their players at the auction with Right To Match (RTM) cards. According to the retention policy, the franchises can retain a maximum of five players by a combination of player retention and right-to-match (RTM) cards (during the auction).

Meanwhile, Twitter was quick to react to the player retention. Here are some of the reactions:
