Cricket is no less than a religion in this cricket-obsessed nation. And the game’s popularity has reached new heights with the arrival of Indian Premier League.

The world-class stars playing in the league and the amount of money involved are not the only two reasons which have contributed to the league’s ever-growing popularity.

Another reason is the most prosperous cricket league in the world has given us some fantastic rags-to-riches stories.

There are several stories of young boys passionate about cricket, who – in the face of challenges and despite all odds – managed to prove their skill and merit to millions in India. And their determination to fight against all the odds have been handsomely rewarded by the IPL. Another such player is, Rinku Singh.

Rinku’s rags-to-riches story is so inspiring that his parents could not stop tears flowing down their cheeks after seeing their son on television.

Kolkata Knight Riders signed up the left-handed batsman who is called the next Suresh Raina by many.  The Knight Riders paid Rs 80 lakh to secure the services of the hard-hitting Uttar Pradesh man.

Rinku made his debut in the season-opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore. He also played the following game against Chennai Super Kings before getting dropped. There are still a lot of games in the season and Rinku might get another chance to prove his mettle.

Coming to Rinku’s background, his father, Khanchandra works as a delivery man and delivers LPG cylinders door-to-door. His elder brother drives an auto rickshaw while his another brother works in a coaching centre.

He fought against all the odds to keep alive his dream of playing cricket. In nine Ranji Trophy games, Rinku had scored 692 runs with an average of 49.

Last year too, Kings XI Punjab had roped him in, but he did not get any game. He then impressed when Mumbai Indians called him for a selection trial where he slammed a 31-ball 91 runs.
