Indian Insititute of Technology professors included a cricketing question in one of their Tests. The professors asked their students what MS Dhoni should do after winning the toss in the first qualifier against Mumbai Indians.

The match will be played at Chepauk Stadium, which has been a paradise for the spinners. However, the dew factor always tempts the captain to elect to bowl first. It is not easy to grip the ball in the second innings as spinners can not put revolutions on the ball as it is wet.

Win the toss and elect to ?

Furthermore, it is not easy for the fast bowlers to be accurate with their length. Meanwhile, the temperature at the start of the match is going to be around 39-degree Celsius. Moreover, the humidity is going to be 70%. Thus, it would be a good decision to bowl first after winning the toss as dew can play a major factor in the outcome of the match.

However, on the other hand, in a match like a Qualifier, it is not a bad decision to bat first and put the runs on the board. In fact, we have seen in the past that scoreboard pressure plays a key role. Consequently, if MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings can put a par score on the board, they have a potent spin bowling line-up to defend it.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians have had their wood-on Chennai Super Kings in the recent past. In the league stage, Rohit Sharma-led side had won both their matches against Chennai Super Kings. Furthermore, Mumbai has won six out of the seven matches they have played against Chennai Super Kings.

On the other side, Mumbai Indians had topped the points table with 18 points under their belt. Chennai had finished at the second position with the same points.
