Jonny Bairstow’s amazing first season in the Indian Premier League came to an end on Tuesday. The England star played his last game for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Chennai Super Kings and has now left for England for international committments. Bairstow was an absolute revelation in the ongoing season of the IPL. The wicketkeeper-batsman who was bought at his base price by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last auction, formed a formidable partnership with David Warner at the top of the order.

In almost all the games, Warner and Bairstow gave Sunrisers a flying start. No surprises then that Warner is at the top of the run-scoring chart while Bairstow is breathing down his neck at the second spot. Bairstow’s maiden stint in IPL, however, ended in a disappointing manner was he was out for a duck against the Super Kings. The Super Kings had then gone on to thrash the Sunrisers by 6 wickets.

“Absolutely loved it. Not my day today but the experience has been unbelievable. The guys here at Sunrisers have been really good. Lot to learn from. I think the main thing is to have confidence in your own ability. Top of the order, going out there and playing the way you like. Today it didn’t come off but I think the boys have done well,” said Jonny Bairstow during the game.

On batting with Warner, he said:

“It’s been fantastic batting at the top of the order with him. If he gets off to a flier, I like to take my time and vice versa.”

But despite the duck in his final game of the season, Bairstow managed to create history in IPL. He has now become the player with most runs in a debut IPL season barring the inaugural edition in 2008. Bairstow left IPL after scoring 445 from just 10 games with the help of 1 century and two fifties. He broke Shreyas Iyer’s four-year old record who had scored 439 for Delhi in 2015.

Here is the list showing most runs by a player in his debut IPL season:

445 Jonny Bairstow (SRH, 2019)
439 Shreyas Iyer (DD, 2015)
398 Faf du Plessis (CSK, 2012)
394 L Simmons (MI, 2014)
391 R Tripathi (RPS, 2017)
382 E Lweis (MI, 2018)
