IPL 2019: Mumbai Indians Appointed Zaheer Khan As Director of Cricket Operations

Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has joined the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) as the Director of Cricket Operations. However, the left-arm pacer has been a part of various teams in the IPL including Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals. However, this is the first time Zaheer has joined backroom staff of a team in IPL.

The three times champion Mumbai Indians appointed Zaheer Khan as the bowling coach for the 2019 edition. Meanwhile, the auction will take place on December 18 (Tuesday) in Jaipur. The former speedster is likely to be a part of the Mumbai auction team to attend the session.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians posted a tweet to welcome Zaheer Khan with his new role. The 40-year-old has bagged 102 wickets from 100 games and now will train the youngster in MI camp. The tweet posted by MI read “He is coming home” with a picture of him bowling.

Zaheer Khan has joined with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Mahela Jayawardene, Robin Singh, Shane Bond and others in MI’s backroom staff. Lasith Malinga will not be there as he had put his name in the pool of players who will be up for auction. The Sri Lankan speedster joined Mumbai Indians as bowling mentors after going unsold. However, MI might buy their former player in the auction.

The three-time IPL champions will be going into the auction with a purse of 11.5 crores. The team has seven slots available. They can buy six Indian and one overseas player. They will look to bank on the young players with the likes of Shivam Dube, who plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket.
