Delhi Capitals have signed up Australia star Alex Carey for the upcoming season of the IPL. Carey, whose base price was INR 50 lakh, went to Delhi for INR 2.4 crore. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals were initially involved in a bidding war for the Australia wicketkeeper before Delhi swooped in and signed up the star player.

Open the innings, play as a finisher, play spin well as well as keep the wickets – Alex Carey has got it all and is thus one of the best limited-overs wicketkeeper-batsmen in the world right now. The left-handed batsman started gathering attention from 2018. In January last year, he scored his first Big Bash League century.

Two days later, he made his ODI debut before making his T20I debut  in the following month. As the time passed, he grew from strength to strength. He became a household name after an impressive outing in the World Cup. Alex Carey scored 375 runs from 10 matches at a fantastic average of 62.50 with his highest score being 85. He was Australia’s 4th highest run-scorer in the competition behind Steve Smith, Aaron Finch and David Warner.

He also set the record for most catches by a wicket keeper in a single edition of the World Cup after pouching 18 catches. In addition to that, he stumped two batsmen too to take his tally to an overall 20 dismissals. Following the World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named Carey as the rising star of the squad. He was named as wicket keeper in the ‘Team of the Tournament’ for the 2019 World Cup by the ICC.
