Former Australia speedster Brett Lee has said Kings XI Punjab have the right head coach in Anil Kumble this season. After a disappointing outing in the last season where they finished sixth, Kings XI Punjab parted ways with Mike Hesson to appoint Kumble.
The former India skipper has not coached any team since stepping down as India’s coach in 2017. As India’s head coach, he has a very good track record. Under him, India beat New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh and England at home before making it to the final of the ICC Champions Trophy.
Kumble also has coaching experience in the IPL. He was associated with Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. During his time with the Mumbai Indians between 2013 and 2015, the franchise won two titles.
“Having someone like that (Anil Kumble) in terms of the mix of the team and certainly the squad will be invaluable. The knowledge, the experiences, will definitely help,” Brett Lee said on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.
“Kings XI need to win, they have got a great squad, they have got a wonderful team that can definitely get close and close but they have not got over the line yet, so, I’m actually waiting for that to happen.
“A great franchise to play for, I put up my hand-up and say that was a lot of fun to play for that franchise,” added Brett Lee, who has played for Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.
Kings XI Punjab are one of the three franchises who are yet to win the IPL. They came closest to winning the league in 2014 when they made it to their first and so far only final where they lost to the Knight Riders. Since their final appearance, they have not made it to the playoffs.
