Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) did make the top four for the first time since 2016; however, the dream came crashing down once again this year. They suffered a six-wicket defeat to SunRisers Hyderabad in the eliminator in Abu Dhabi, bringing their campaign to an end. RCB also ended IPL 2020 with five losses on the bounce, which began with a come-from-behind victory against SRH.

The trend of over-reliance for runs on Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers continued even this year despite the presence of Moeen Ali and Aaron Finch. While Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers did have satisfactory outings this year, their form was inconsistent in the latter half of the edition. However, there were positives in the form of Devdutt Padikkal, Chris Morris, and Yuzvendra Chahal, who all performed in a league of their own.

We take a look at Royal Challengers Bangalore’s players’ performance ratings:

Virat Kohli – 7/10:

With the bat, Virat Kohli mustered 466 runs in 15 games with three half-centuries with an average of 42.36 and strike rate of 121.35. However, the over-dependency on him and AB De Villiers apart from his captaincy at various stages cost the Royal Challengers several games at the back end. The 32-year old opened in the last game; however, he failed, managing only six runs as the franchise’s campaign came to a close.

Moeen Ali – 1/10:

Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali, who the franchise opted to retain for IPL 2020 after he had a reasonably good edition, had a forgettable one this year. Moeen Ali featured in three games in IPL 2020 and scraped through to only 12 runs and managed only one wicket in five overs. The England all-rounder perished for a first-ball duck off a free hit in RCB’s last match against SRH. The franchise could likely release Ali ahead of IPL 2021.

Yuzvendra Chahal – 8.5/10:

Yuzvendra Chahal [Photo-IPL]
Yuzvendra Chahal was the go-to man for Virat Kohli, whether he needed wickets or control the run-flow. Yuzvendra Chahal often lured the batsmen into playing the big shots and made them his victims as a result. In 15 matches, the leggie took 21 wickets at 19.29 with an economy rate of 7.08.

AB De Villiers – 9/10:

AB De Villiers was unfortunate to go empty-handed once again as Royal Challengers Bangalore failed to produce the dream run in IPL 2020. However, there were no shortage of efforts from AB De Villiers as he not only carried the batting responsibilities but also kept wickets. The veteran scored 454 runs in 15 games with five fifties at a strike rate of 158.74. He mustered a valiant fifty in the eliminator as well.

Shivam Dube – 3/10:

Shivam Dube [Photo-Twitter]
Shivam Dube, who is a promising all-rounder, had a below-par outing as well. At the lower middle-order, the expectation was that Shivam Dube could blast some quick runs while also running the ones and twos swiftly. In 11 games, Dube only had a strike rate of 122.86 and managed 129 runs with a best score of 27*. With the ball, he took only four wickets at 18.25.

Aaron Finch – 4/10:

RCB opted for Aaron Finch in the auction for a hefty amount of INR 4.4 crores; however, he could not live up to the billing. Aaron Finch, who opened the innings with Devdutt Padikkal, managed only one fifty in 12 games while scoring 268 runs at 22.33. The management moved to Josh Philippe for a few games; however, his mixed returns forced them to shift to Finch for the eliminator. The 33-year old could not make a monumental difference, managing 32 off 30 balls.

Gurkeerat Singh Mann – 3.5/10:

Gurkeerat Singh Mann, who is a promising middle-order batsman, could not live up to the same in the eight matches in IPL 2020. The eight games from Gurkeerat Singh produced only 71 runs at a strike rate of 88.75. But of the eight fixtures, he batted only in five and in some of those, the 30-year old needed to go for the big shots from the get-go. Hence, a longer run for him and promotion could be useful moving forward.

Mohammed Siraj – 7/10:

Mohammed Siraj was one of the significant positives for the Royal Challengers from IPL 2020 as his bowling vastly improved from the last two seasons. Mohammed Siraj was regularly able to swing the ball to trouble the batsmen, accounting for 11 wickets in nine games at 21.45. The seamer needs to build upon this performance to develop his reputation as the team’s spearhead.

Chris Morris – 8/10:

Paceman Chris Morris proved as a massive asset as he expertly bowled with the new ball and death, threatening batsmen. In nine matches, Chris Morris produced 11 wickets at 19.29 with a brilliant economy rate of 6.63. However, the 32-year old missed the eliminator and RCB would have loved some contributions from him with the bat as well.

Devdutt Padikkal – 10/10:

Devdutt Padikkal, who played his first IPL season, could not have done better in a ruthlessly competitive tournament. Devdutt Padikkal’s 473 runs are the highest for RCB in IPL 2020 and the sixth-highest overall. The southpaw scored five half-centuries in 15 fixtures; however, he must improve his strike rate of 124 moving forward. All in all, he could well take the award for the emerging player of the edition.

Josh Philippe – 4/10:

Josh Philippe, who came on the back of an impressive Big Bash League 2020, could not prove himself in IPL 2020. The five matches from him produced only 78 runs with a top score of 33 at 19.50 and a strike rate of 101.30. The franchise could likely retain the 23-year old, giving him a chance to flourish in the vastly different Indian conditions.

Shahbaz Ahmed – 2/10:

Not much could one make of all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed’s performance as he received only two matches in IPL 2020. The brightest spot for Shahbaz Ahmed was when he picked two wickets against the Delhi Capitals, accounting for Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane with his left-arm spin. The franchise could likely retain him to see what he can do with the bat.

Navdeep Saini

Express paceman Navdeep Saini performed well in patches; however, did not have a particularly impressive IPL 2020. In 13 matches, Navdeep Saini managed only six wickets at a woeful average of 63.17 and economy rate of 8.30. The expectation was certainly higher from the 27-year old, considering he impressed last year and since the time Saini debuted for India.

Dale Steyn – 2/10:

One of the greatest fast bowlers of the generation, Dale Steyn experienced a disastrous outing in IPL 2020. In three matches, the South African speedster picked up only one wicket at a jaw-dropping average of 133 and an economy rate of 11.40. The Royal Challengers will likely release him and opt for some other fast bowler.

Washington Sundar – 6/10:

Washington Sundar had one of the best economy rates of IPL 2020, conceding only 5.96 runs in 15 games. However, Washington Sundar’s wicket-tally were only eight at an average of 37.25. The 21-year old also showed his batting ability at times as he had a strike rate of 116.84 and a promotion could bode well for the franchise in IPL 2021.

Isuru Udana – 5.5/10:

Playing in his first IPL, Sri Lankan left-arm seamer Isuru Udana endured an average season. In 10 games, Isuru Udana managed only eight wickets at 35.25 with an economy rate of 9.72. The franchise could likely retain him ahead of IPL 2021, allowing him a longer rope.

Umesh Yadav – 0.5/10:

Umesh Yadav had a highly disappointing IPL 2020 as he played only the first two matches and proved ineffective. Umesh Yadav could pick not a single wicket and conceded runs at 11.86 per over. The Royal Challengers could likely release the right-arm seamer, considering they have two quality bowlers in Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini.

Adam Zampa – 6/10:

SunRisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore

Adam Zampa replaced Kane Richardson at the Royal Challengers at the 11th hour; however, played only three matches. In three games, Adam Zampa managed two wickets and bowled a highly economical spell in the last fixture, finishing with figures of 4-0-12-1 to give his side a genuine chance. The leggie could do wonders for the franchise in the upcoming seasons if retained.
