The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises have never shied away from investing in youngsters and thus Priyam Garg was always going to be in demand. Just days before the auction, he was named the captain of India’s U19 team for the upcoming ICC U19 World Cup in South Africa next month. The youngster is already a regular for Uttar Pradesh in first-class and List A cricket.
He made his List A and first-class debut in the last session and impressed straight away. The highly-rated youngster made a roaring entry into first-class cricket with a century on debut against Goa. By the end of his maiden Ranji Trophy season, he had amassed 814 runs in ten matches at an average of 67.83. It was the second-highest tally for Uttar Pradesh, behind Rinku Singh’s 953.
In 12 first-class matches so far, Garg has 867 runs at an average of 66.69, with two centuries, and a best of 206. In List A cricket, he’s made 707 runs in 19 outings at an average of more than 47. Talking about the auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad secured the services of the youngster. Garg, whose base price was INR 20 lakh, was bought by the Sunrisers for INR 1.9 crore.
Kings XI Punjab started the bidding for Priyam Garg before Sunrisers Hyderabad joined in. Both the teams went neck-to-neck for the youngster before the Sunrisers secured his services.
