The 2020 season of the Indian Premier League [IPL] saw plenty of bowlers leave their mark with their skills, talent, and temperament.

While the likes of Rashid Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Varun Chakravarthy spun a web around the batsmen, as far as the fast bowling is concerned, T Natarajan impressed with his ability to nail in yorkers at will and the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Jasprit Bumrah, and Jofra Archer did what they always d0- pick up wickets amidst sustained hostility.

Eventually, won the coveted ‘Purple Cap’ to join an elite list of bowlers who had achieved the same feat in the past seasons.

On that note, here’s a look at the list of all ‘Purple Cap’ winners in IPL from 2008 to 2020:

2008- Sohail Tanvir [Rajasthan Royals]

Sohail Tanvir was one of the cornerstones of the Rajasthan Royals title-winning campaign in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League.

The Pakistani fast bowler claimed a total of 22 wickets in a mere 11 games at an average of 12.09 and a barely believable economy rate of 6.46. His best figures of 6-14 stood the test of time for 11 years before it was eventually broken by Alzarri Joseph, who claimed 6-12 against the SunRisers Hyderabad in the 2019 season.

2009- RP Singh [Deccan Chargers]

Just like Sohail Tanvir, RP Singh was one of the major cornerstones in his sides’ title-winning campaign in the 2019 edition of the IPL.

Bowling on helpful tracks of South Africa, RP Singh made the ball talk, and how! The southpaw claimed a total of 23 wickets in 16 games at an average of 18.13 and an economy rate of 6.98.

2010- Pragyan Ojha (Deccan Chargers)

2010 might have turned out to be Chennai Super Kings year but with the ball, it was Deccan Chargers Pragyan Ojha, who ruled the roost.

The left-arm spinner claimed a total of 21 wickets in 16 games at an average of 20.43 and an economy rate of 7.29, and was deservingly awarded the coveted ‘Purple Cap’.

2011- Lasith Malinga [Mumbai Indians]

2011 was a great year for Lasith Malinga. Not only did he spearhead Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign but he did an encore of it while donning the blue and gold of the Mumbai Indians.

The most successful bowler in the history of the IPL, Lasith Malinga claimed a total of 28 wickets in 16 games at an average of 13.39 and an economy rate of 5.95 which also included a five-wicket haul.

2012- Morne Morkel [Delhi Capitals]

Delhi Capitals may have failed to win the coveted IPL title despite dominating the entire season but their pace-bowling spearhead, Morne Morkel ensured that he stayed at the top of the pile as far as the leading wicket-takers are concerned.

The South African pacer finished with 25 wickets in 16 outings at an average of 18.17 and was fittingly awarded the coveted ‘Purple Cap’.

2013- Dwayne Bravo [Chennai Super Kings]

2013 proved to be the year for Chennai Super Kings smiling assassin’ Dwayne Bravo.

Bravo with his bag of tricks was literally unplayable throughout the season and eventually finished with 32 wickets- the most by a bowler in a single season of the IPL- in 18 games at an average of 15.53.

2014- Mohit Sharma [Chennai Super Kings]

Mohit Sharma was at his peak as a fast bowler during the 2014-15 season.

And, it was clearly evident during the 2014 IPL where he spearheaded Chennai Super Kings’ fast-bowling unit with aplomb.

Sharma finished the season as the leading wicket-taker, claiming as many as 23 wickets in 16 games at an average of 19.65.

2015- Dwayne Bravo [Chennai Super Kings]

After having topped the wicket-taking charts in 2013, Dwayne Bravo was once again at his best in the 2015 season.

The West Indian all-rounder once again bamboozled batsmen with the variety ot tricks in his armor, eventually ending up with 26 wickets in 17 games at an average of 16.38 to once grab the coveted ‘Purple Cap’.

2016- & 2017- Bhuvneshwar Kumar [SunRisers Hyderabad]

The next two seasons- 2016 and 2017- belonged to India and SunRisers Hyderabad pacer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

While David Warner was SRH’s spearhead with the bat in their triumphant 2016 campaign, it was Bhuvi, who stranglehold the opposition batsmen with his knuckleballs and plethora of other variations.

Bhuvneshwar was near impregnable in both 2016 and 2017. The seam-and-swing bowler claimed 23 wickets in 17 games in the 2016 season before backing it up with yet another stellar campaign a year later when he grabbed 26 wickets in 14 outings to become the only bowler to win the ‘Purple Cap’ in consecutive seasons.

2018- Andrew Tye [Kings XI Punjab]

Andrew Tye was picked by Chennai Super Kings for the 2015 season but it took another two years and a new franchise in the now-defunct Gujarat Lions for the Australian pacer to earn his debut. Tye, courtesy of his clever change of place and a deadly knuckle-ball, hit the jackpot in his very first outing, claiming a hat-trick besides registering the best figures by a debutant- 5/17.

Tye’s exploits in 2017 paved the way for a bidding war between Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab, and Rajasthan Royals in the 2018 auctions, and it was eventually KXIP who grabbed his services by shelling out a whopping Rs 7.2 Crore.

Tye lived up to the billing to the hilt as he finished as the leading wicket-taker of the season- 24 wickets in 14 games- to win the ‘Purple Cap’.

2019- Imran Tahir [Chennai Super Kings]

There are few better sights in the game than watching an excited Imran Tahir pulling off his Usain Bolt moniker and take a victory lap around the ground every time he bamboozles a batsman with his googly or the leg-spinner.

And, during the 2019 season of the IPL, we saw a plethora of that, as the veteran leg-spinner spun a sustained web around the opposition batsmen at CSK’s fortress, Chepauk.

Tahir spearheaded CSK’s bowling-unit with disdain last season, claiming 26 wickets in 17 games at an average of 16.57 and an economy rate of 6.69.

2020- Kagiso Rabada [Delhi Capitals]

Kagiso Rabada once again spearheaded the Delhi Capitals bowling attack with disdain this year.

Rabada displayed hostility and consistency to the hilt and every time Shreyas Iyer turned to his ace pacer, Rabada more-often-than-not delivered. The South African bolter would have been disappointed with his performance in the final [1-32 in three overs] but nonetheless, he still finished with 30 wickets- the second-most by any bowler in the history of the IPL- in 17 games at an average of 18.26 and an economy rate of 8.34.
