The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed the fixture of two Irani Cup games for the upcoming domestic season, Cricbuzz reported. As per the detailed domestic programme shared among the state associations by the BCCI, the two games will be played in October and again in March 2023.
In a statement on Sunday, the Saurashtra Cricket Association stated, “It is very heartening that domestic season 2022-23 of BCCI is to be played in full swing and Irani Cup is to be played after two long years.”
“We thank secretary BCCI Mr Jay Shah for this gesture of granting us an Irani Cup game. We are indebted to him and the BCCI. We are looking forward to playing the match,” SCA president Jaydev Shah told Cricbuzz, revealing the BCCI decision.
The traditional fixture, normally the season-opener, is played between the reigning Ranji champions and Rest of India.
According to the schedule, the first Irani game is slated to be played between Saurashtra, the 2019-20 Ranji champions, and Rest of India (RoI) from October 1 to 5 in Rajkot. The second Irani game will be between the current Ranji Champions Madhya Pradesh and RoI in Indore from March 1 to 5 (2023) in Indore.
“Saurashtra had won the Ranji Trophy title in 2019-20 season, just before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, so now that the Irani Cup is returning after a hiatus, the Board decided to start the tournament with Saurashtra taking on the Rest of India,” a BCCI insider confirmed.
