Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers – These are some of the batsmen James Anderson has bowled to in his illustrious career and has also enjoyed a good amount of success against them. James Anderson has proved his worth in almost all the parts of the world and is currently England’s leading wicket-taker in the longest format of the game.

But while he has bowled to a number of legendary batsmen, no one seems to have troubled him more than former Australia captain Ricky Ponting. Speaking in the Sky Sports studio, the England legend recently revealed that Ricky Ponting was the toughest batsman he bowled at.

James Anderson played 12 Tests against Ricky Ponting and dismissed him four times. The right-arm pacer removed the legendary batsman for 12 runs or less on each occasion. However, Ricky Ponting had the upper hand in the duel as he scored three centuries and four fifties in those 12 Tests.

“It has to be Ricky Ponting,” said Anderson before stating that the fear of failure was one of the reasons he found the former Australia batsman challenging.

“I’d be thinking ‘I can’t bowl short because he would pull me over mid-wicket, I can’t bowl full because he would drive me straight back down the ground’. Where can I bowl?,” added Anderson. “I found him really intimidating to bowl at.”

James Anderson, meanwhile, is currently working on his fitness to recover in time for England’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. England will play a couple of Tests in Sri Lanka next month. After being on the sidelines for nearly five months with a rib fracture, Anderson returned to action during the tour of South Africa. However, he could only play two Tests before suffering a rib injury.
