West Indian Test captain Jason Holder remains one of the most valuable cricketers today and despite not having the most astounding numbers, he continues to impress. While Jason Holder has contributed significantly to the West Indies’ cause with the bat and ball, the 29-year old took a screamer against New Zealand in the ongoing second Test in New Zealand. He took it while fielding at the slip cordon to get rid of Will Young.
The incident came in the 43rd over on the first day when seamer Shannon Gabriel delivered a full ball with seam movement. Will Young, who was playing in only his second Test, drove on to the off-side but ended up getting a thick edge. The ball kept dying on him and Holder quickly moved to his right and grabbed it with one hand, diving and using his height to significant effect. Young had to depart for 43.

In the process, Shannon Gabriel, who was playing his 50th Test, reached his 150th wicket. West Indies will aim to bounce back to win the Wellington Test after the hosts dished out a hammering in the first by an innings and 134 runs. The Caribbeans had to hand debuts for keeper-batsman Joshua De Silva in place of Shane Dowrich and Chemar Holder instead of Kemar Roach for the must-win game.

Jason Holder’s West Indies on the back foot after the first day:

Despite six wickets falling on the first day of the second Test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, West Indies found themselves on the back foot. Henry Nicholls’ unbeaten 117 propelled the Kiwis to 294 while his half-century partnerships with Will Young, BJ Watling, and Daryl Mitchell helped the cause significantly.
Kane Williamson, who mustered 251 in the last Test, stayed out of this Test due to paternity leave. Opening batsman Tom Latham stepped up to the lead in his absence and stitched an opening stand of 31 with Tom Blundell. Gabriel was the pick of the bowlers for the tourists, having figures of 18-5-57-3. Jason Holder could not find success with the ball so far, having figures of 22-5-62-0.
