Who would have expected Jasprit Bumrah to be one of the go-to fast bowlers for India after being stroked for three boundaries in his first three deliveries on IPL debut? However, what followed that three boundaries was the wicket of Virat Kohli, and since then, there was no stopping Bumrah in the game of cricket.
Following his incredible IPL seasons with Mumbai Indians’ franchise, the selectors asked him to travel Australia to replace injured Mohammed Shami in the final ODI of the 5-match ODI series under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. And guess what? He picked Steve Smith as his maiden international wicket.

I had no nerves – Jasprit Bumrah
Speaking to Hindustan Times regarding the same, Jasprit Bumrah revealed that he picked a long flight straight to Sydney, and was in thoughts to impress the management with his bowling in the practice sessions. However, the session was rained out, and he had zero expectations of making his debut. But, as always, the management surprised the experts by including him in the final ODI of the series.
“I took a direct flight from Delhi to Sydney, a long flight,” Bumrah says. “I remember watching two movies. I had no nerves. I was not sure that I was going to play, but I was very happy. Now at least I’ll get my clothes off the Indian team! I’m in the Indian team, no jet lag, and if the team sees what I do in the nets, maybe I would get a chance.”

On the morning of the match, at the team meeting, he was told he would play. “Then, I was a little nervous. I was not prepared,” he says. “But sometimes it is best that you don’t overanalyse, you just go with the flow.”
It’s only a jump to mindset:
Jasprit Bumrah expected to get a bowling plan or some discussions with the coach and the captain, but that did not happen. Instead, he was straight on the field. When the opening bowlers were done with their spells, MS Dhoni, the then captain, handed him the ball.

”Dhoni Bhai told me, ‘whatever field you want, you just tell me, and we’ll give you that, just bowl like you know how to bowl. I realised that coming from domestic cricket to international cricket, it’s only a jump of mindset,” he says. “Rather than trying to change things or think that I’m bowling to Steve Smith or David Warner, I could just try to do the things that I was doing in domestic cricket, play this like I’m playing for Gujarat. I was happy.”
