Jasprit Bumrah, one of the premier bowlers in the game of cricket, has managed to have cemented his spot in India’s squad since his arrival. Making his debut for India in 2016, he has since gone on and wreaked havoc amongst the batsmen with his toe-crushing yorkers — and brutal death bowling. Although he is out of form at the moment – there is no denying that he is very important for the team.

Bumrah was among the key factors in India’s maiden Test series triumph in Australia, last season. He had a whippy and deceptive action, was quick off the pitch, had a nasty short ball and a telling yorker.

The prominent face of India, Bumrah moved the new ball just enough to find the edge and when the ball became older, he struck with reverse swing. Yet, Bumrah at Wellington seemed a shadow of his former self, having spent a long period in the sidelines tending to a stress fracture of the lower back.

In the first Test, there were times when Bumrah appeared pedestrian. The fiery release with the arm-speed was not in view and the Kiwis were able to play him comfortably.

Teams must have seen endless videos: John Wright

Meanwhile, John Wright, who led India to a historic Test and ODI triumph in Pakistan in 2004 during his coaching stint, reflected upon the form of Bumrah since his return to the national side from an injury.

“He’s coming back after an injury. He’s finding his feet and rhythm again. It can happen to most players. After the highs, there is a plateau,” Wright, whom Bumrah attributes for shaping his international career, said.

“Teams must have seen endless videos of him. Once you become the lynchpin of an attack, the opposition teams really put you under the scanner and look for methods to cope with you best,” Wright stated.

Bumrah picked up a solitary wicket in the recently-concluded Test while he has gone wicketless in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand.

“Sometimes, they just play you off, not give wickets to you. Bumrah is an intelligent person, and I am sure he will find a way out. He has to fight his way through such periods,” he added.
