England swashbuckling batsman Jonny Bairstow has withdrawn from the tenth edition of the Big Bash League following his recall to the national sides’ Test set-up for the winter tour of Sri Lanka.

The 10th season of the Big Bash League is scheduled to kickstart from December 10, and Jonny Bairstow, who is currently with the English side in South Africa, was slated to turn out for Melbourne Stars after Christmas.

David Hussey, former Australian batsman and the head coach of the Melbourne Stars, expressed his disappointment on missing out from availing the services of the dynamic Jonny Bairstow.

Hussey, however, wished the Yorkshireman good luck on his recall to the Test set-up.

We’re naturally disappointed Jonny won’t be able to link up with us this season but we wish him well on his recall and England’s winter tours,” Melbourne Stars coach David Hussey said.

England are yet to confirm their squad for the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, which will immediately be followed by a four-match rubber in India.

Jonny Bairstow has not played a Test for England ever since he was dropped from the set-up after a difficult Ashes campaign in the summer of 2019. He, however, stroked a hundred in his last Test outing in Sri Lanka (in 2018) and England will hope that the wicketkeeper-batsman emulates his feat of 2018 this time around.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Stars have named Andre Fletcher as Jonny Bairstow’s replacement.
